El Sokhna Zafarana 59 Ondulating road until the junction to Cairo then mostly down – OK surface – hard shoulder – lorries – supermarkets in resorts
Zafarana Ras Ghareb 105 First coffee shop 33 Km before Ras Ghareb – shops outside Zafarana after the military checkpoint – water in Sáhara Inn overpriced (12EGP)try the petrol station – good road surface (except in a couple of patches) – Hard shoulder
Ras Ghareb Hurghada 154 Road surface worse than in previous days for the first half then new tarmac. Petrol station about 73Km in – police escorts door to door
Hurghada Zafaga 56 Busy road until the airport with no hard shoulder – no Checkpoint of leaving the town but police escorts from next checkpoint
Zafaga Km 85 41 Good road – steady climb but OK gradients – police escorts all the way- police Checkpoint and water 40 Km from Safaga on the road I was in – police did not let me camp there instead taking me to police Checkpoint at Km 85 where there are restaurants and water
Km 85 Qena 85 good road – at least 3 police checkpoints where you can get water – police escorts all the way
Qena Luxor 72 Very different road green and by canal – villages and lots of speed bumps – drinking water available everywhere – regular police checkpoints and police escorts all the way
Luxor Esna 48 East bank of Nile – No hard shoulder to start with – good surface-water available everywhere – no police escorts – humps by each village/checkpoints/bridges
Esna Edfu 50 cycled on the West Bank of the River smaller road but surface not too bad – lots of villages – only one police checkpoint and no escorts- lethal speed bumps at some of the villages – water available everywhere
Edfu Aswan 104 The road follows the railway line – it is a bit more undulating that in previous days but nothing remarkable – less villages than in previous days but I had no problem with water
Aswan Police Checkpoint 150KM 40 leaving Aswan you need to cross the Old Dam and bicycles are not allowed. The police stopped cars for me and my bike and deposited me at the other side of the Dam. Stopped at the first checkpoint as road closed due to huge sandstorm – strong gusts of cross wind – got lift from police to checkpoint
Police Checkpoint Toshka Police Checkpoint 117 Very remote – beautiful desert- couple of restaurants that I have added to – last 10km to checkpoint undulating – fabulous tarmac
Toshka Police Checkpoint Abu Simbel 53 Good tarmac
